A.P. Literature Exam Tips
Helpful Handouts
Over the course of the semester, my classmates and I have received numerous handouts to help us prepare for the A.P Exam. Here are a couple that were most beneficial to me:
Multiple Choice
There are two parts to the A.P. Exam, the first being multiple choice. In this section you'll have to read a few pieces of literature and answer some questions for each. This can get long, tiring, and just plain boring. However, I have found a few tips to help me power through and answer the questions to the best of my ability.
I have learned these tips and practiced them with every new multiple choice test I get handed. After using these tips and applying them to my practices, I have increased my score by 39%. The difference is clear when looking at my first multiple choice practice, to my most recent one. Can you tell the difference?

Essays
Prompt 1:
Poem The first prompt will be incorporated with a poem. The prompt will ask you to focus on certain aspects (ex: characterization, or literary devices). Often times they will have you compare two separate poems. You will have to read and analyze the given literature and write an essay answering the prompt to the best of your ability. |
Prompt 2:
Prose The second prompt will be a prose piece; usually from a popular novel. Again, you will have to analyze the literature and answer the specific questions the prompt gave. |
Prompt 3:
Student's Choice The third prompt is considered the most difficult (especially to me). Instead of being given a piece of literature to analyze, you are given a specific concept or issue. You must pick an A.P. level piece of literature and write an essay that fits the concept. |
Knowing what and what not to do when your writing an essay is VERY important. You want to make sure you write your piece like it is an "essay," not a story or a summary piece. Here are a few Do's and Don't when writing your A.P. Exam Essays.
